Portable Scanners

SirsiDynix Symphony supports the following Intermec portable scanning devices.

All these models are generically referred to as scanners, but the 2410, T2090, and the 9440 have different internal and external features. Separate FAQ topics describe the operation of each model.

If your library uses SirsiDynix’s PocketCirc, there is a separate Help file located on the unit.

Intermec 2410 Batch Handheld Terminal

The Intermec 2410 Batch Handheld Terminal is a lightweight batch handheld unit with a high contrast, scratch resistant, display. Accessories such as holsters, belt clips and a pistol grip handle are available.

In SirsiDynix Symphony, the 2410 is used to capture statistics on in-house use of materials before reshelving, and for taking physical shelf inventories. Unicorn 99 or a later version and the WorkFlows client are prerequisites for use of the 2410.

Collected data is uploaded using a program on the workstation to upload the scanner data to a file specified on the workstation. The Scanner Transfer utility wizard is used to upload scanner data from the workstation to the server.

For more information about the physical inventory process, see FAQs: Creating an Inventory. For more information about using the 2410, see FAQs: Using the Intermec 2410 Batch Handheld Terminal.

Keyboard Functions

The following keys on the 2410 are used in the inventory process.

Power – The yellow Power key, labelled I/O, is located in the center of the bottom row of keys.
Down-Arrow – The down-arrow key is located directly below and to the right of the large yellow scan key.
ENTER – The gray kidney-shaped ENTER key is on the right center of the keypad.

System Messages

When you put the Model 2410 device in its docking cradle, it provides visual feedback on its status. When first placed in the docking system, the yellow charge indicator (the first indicator on the bottom right side of the charging base) illuminates. After charging is complete, the second indicator on the bottom right illuminates green.

The Intermec 2410 has the capacity to scan approximately 3000 barcodes. The battery will provide approximately 4-5 hours of operation before recharging is required. The battery pack is a 3.8 volt nickel metal hydride battery that will not reach its full potential/capacity until 8 to 12 charge/discharge cycles.

Intermec TRAKKER® T2090 Handheld Data Collection Computer

The Intermec TRAKKER® T2090 Handheld Data Collection Computer is a lightweight, pocket-sized computer with a laser scanner. The T2090 has an 8 line by 20 character display panel with a backlight that can be on or off, three application controlled keys, a large centrally located ENTER key, two modes of keyboard operation (alpha or numeric), 13 alphanumeric data entry keys, and a rechargeable battery pack. The battery is charged when the unit is placed in its docking cradle.

In SirsiDynix Symphony, the T2090 is used to capture statistics on in-house use of materials before reshelving, and for taking physical shelf inventories. Unicorn 99 or a later version and the WorkFlows client are prerequisites for use of the T2090.

A library may have as many scanners recording data as necessary. Each operates independently, like a separate workstation. A scanner holds approximately 5000 transactions.

The T2090 uses its docking cradle to communicate with a workstation through a serial port. Data collected by the scanner is uploaded by a program on the workstation to upload the scanner data to a file specified on the workstation. Use the Scanner Upload Utility Wizard to upload scanner data from the workstation to the server.

For more information about the physical inventory process, see FAQs: Creating an Inventory. For more information about using the 2090, see FAQs: Using the Intermec TRAKKER® T2090 Hand-Held Computerl.

Keyboard Functions

The following keys on the T2090 are used in the inventory process.

Power – The Power key, labelled I/O, is located on the bottom of the keypad.
SPACE – The SPACE key, labelled SP, is located on the lower right corner of the keypad. This key moves the cursor one space to the right and inserts a space.
BACKSPACE – The BACKSPACE key, labelled BS, is located on the lower left corner of the keypad. This key moves the cursor one space to the left and erases the character in that place.
Num/Alpha Lock Key – The numeric/alphabetic lock key, labeled with an arrow pointing up, is located on the upper left corner of the keypad. By default, the T2090 powers up in numeric mode. To switch to alphabetic mode, press the numeric/alphabetic lock key. This is a toggle switch; press it again to return to numeric mode.
ENTER – The ENTER key is centered at the top of the keypad. It is used to send transactions to the T2090 if a barcode is typed rather than scanned.

System Messages

When you place the T2090 device in its docking cradle, it provides visual feedback on its status. When first placed in the docking system, an LED beeps and turns red. After five seconds the charging status cycle is checked. If the system is actively charging, the LED will blink on and off (two seconds on, two seconds off) for at least fifteen minutes. A full charge should take four hours or less.

Once the unit is fully charged, the LED turns green and is on in a constant state. When the unit is removed from its cradle, the device beeps and the LED extinguishes. The unit can be removed from its cradle at any time during its charging cycle. Typically, the T2090 can be used for up to six hours after being fully charged.

If the T2090 encounters a very low battery condition, it tries to go into the Suspend state. Once in the Suspend state, the unit will not exit until its battery voltage is sufficient. If the unit is in the Off state and a boot is attempted, the system checks the battery voltage, and, if a very low battery state is encountered, the unit turns off rather than continuing the booting process.

Intermec 9440 TRAKKER® Handheld Terminal

The 9440 has a liquid crystal display that displays the current four lines of input. The ALT key displays below the F1 key and makes a single low beep when pressed. Up to 16 lines of previously displayed data may be viewed by pressing ALT+B. To return to the current lines of the screen, press ALT+A.

Keyboard Functions

The following conventions apply when using the 9440.

The cursor is an underscore mark ( _ ). After you type data in any field you must press the ENTER key to process it.
If data has been recorded in the scanner, you will hear a single high beep when you press ENTER.
If you are typing data in a field and you make a mistake, use the BACKSPACE key and type the data correctly.
If you are typing data in a field and you need to exit that particular function entirely, use the BACKSPACE key to empty the data field, and then press the appropriate function key for the next command.
If you press ENTER without typing or wanding in any data, the screen continues to redisplay the prompt.

If you press the function key for a command and don’t enter any data and don’t press any keys, the scanner will exit the command after one minute and return to the ENTER FUNCTION_ prompt. After five minutes with no activity, the scanner will shut itself off. When the ON/OFF key is pressed, the scanner will come back on and display the screen just as it was left from the last command.

In SirsiDynix Symphony, the 9440 has three basic uses.

Taking physical shelf inventories
Capturing statistics on in-house use of materials before reshelving
Taking personal inventories of items in offices or locations outside the library shelves, and checking the material out to the user

After the day’s activities are complete, connect the 9440 to a workstation and upload the data using the Scanner Upload Utility Wizard. After uploading, plug-in the scanner to recharge overnight.

A library may have as many scanners recording data as necessary. Each operates independently, like a separate workstation. Each scanner’s recorded data must be loaded into the SirsiDynix Symphony database. A scanner will hold approximately 5000 transactions (total activity).

For more information about the physical inventory process, see FAQs: Creating an Inventory. For more information about using the 9440, see FAQs: Using the Intermec TRAKKER® 9440Handheld Terminal. For more information about the personal inventory process, see FAQs: Creating a Personal Inventory.

System Messages

If you see the cursor blinking and the beeps of the scanner change, then the batteries are getting low. Press ALT+B to see a diagnostic message from the scanner.

The message may be LOW BATT. This means the battery pack is low. If possible, stop operations and attach the power supply and plug into an electrical socket to charge. It will take approximately 14 hours to recharge. The scanner may be operated with the power supply while the battery pack is charging. If the power supply cannot be used, you may insert an optional alkaline battery pack and continue operations. If neither power supply nor spare battery pack is attached after the LOW BATT message is received, the scanner will shut itself off after 10-30 minutes of continuous operation.

The data recorded by the scanner will be saved in the scanner’s memory by the backup battery. The backup battery will run for several years. It supplies power to the scanner when the regular battery pack gets low. The backup battery remembers the data recorded in a particular session including date and time, even when the scanner is turned off or the regular battery pack is removed.

If the message LOW BACKUP is received, the backup battery is low. Call SirsiDynix Customer Support. Do not try to replace or recharge the backup battery.
