FAQs: Using the Intermec TRAKKER® 9440Handheld Terminal

How do I log in to the Model 9440?

Before the scanner can be used it is first necessary to login.

Login Command

The 9440 Login command adds a particular identifying mark to every piece of data the scanner records. When the recorded data is uploaded to the server and added to the SirsiDynix Symphony database, the login identifier will distinguish between data recorded at one location or for a particular project, from data recorded in the same scanner at a different location or for a different purpose.

If a library is using the scanner in a bookmobile, and the library wants to be able to distinguish circulation activity by stop, then a login name would be established for each stop. Before the bookmobile personnel begins circulation activities at a stop, someone would login with that stop’s login identifier. When the bookmobile was driven to the next stop, another login command would change from the previous stop’s login to the next stop’s login.

These login names may be one to eight lowercase characters or numbers, with no marks of punctuation or spaces. The login names might refer to the stops by number if the bookmobile route doesn’t change (as in stop1, stop2, stop3). Or, the login names might refer to the location of the stop, especially if the bookmobile route changes periodically.

For example, the login name for the stop at Parkway Place Mall might be ”parkway.” The login name for the stop at the University Baptist Church might be ”univbapt.” The login name for the stop at Oak Grove Elementary might be ”oakgrove.” The login name for the stop in the community of New Market might be ”Newmarket.” These login names must correspond to the User ID of a user record in the SirsiDynix Symphony database.

If a library using the scanner in a bookmobile doesn’t need to distinguish circulation activity by stop, then the single login name ”scanner” could be used for all stops. At the beginning of the bookmobile route, someone would login as ”scanner” and check the date and time. There will already be a login called ”scanner” on the scanner and a user record with a user ID of SCANNER on the server.

When you press the LOGIN key, the scanner screen appears.

LOGIN IS oakgrove
IS THE LOGIN CORRECT
(Y,N)?_

If you type Y for yes and press ENTER, then the login name is not changed and the screen displays another ENTER FUNCTION_ prompt.

If you type N for no and press ENTER, then the screen displays the ENTER LOGIN:_ prompt. Type a valid login name and press ENTER. The typed login name must correspond to the user ID of a user record in the SirsiDynix Symphony database. The scanner will respond with the message ”LOGIN CHANGED TO,” the new login name, and display another ENTER FUNCTION_ prompt.

How are the Model 9440 function keys used?

The scanner’s operation is controlled by function keys. There are two command levels, primary and secondary. Each of the four function keys produces a different command if the ALT key is pressed first.

Primary Command Level

The list of commands is always available by pressing F1 (Help Key Display). Pressing F1 shows all the keys available for the current command level. You may press any function key while viewing the Help Key display. Pressing N and ENTER will exit the help and cause the ENTER FUNCTION:_ prompt to appear. Pressing Y and ENTER will cause the next three function keys to appear.

How do I set the date and time for the 9440?

Use the Time command to verify the correct date and time in the scanner. Typically, you would change this only if the batteries in the scanner failed, or if there is a seasonal time change. When you press the Time key, the scanner screen appears.

THE DATE AND TIME IS 03/04/21:10:07
IS THE DATE AND TIMECORRECT(Y,N)?_

If you type Y for yes and press ENTER, then the date and time is not changed and the screen displays the ENTER FUNCTION_ prompt.

If you type N for no and press ENTER, then the screen asks you to ENTER CORRECT DATE AND TIME and displays the format for entering the year, month, day, hour, and minute. Type the new date and time in the format YY/MM/DD:HH:MM and press ENTER.

Press ALT+S to enter a / (slash)
Press ALT+X to enter a : (colon)

After you press ENTER, the scanner responds with the following message.

DATE AND TIME CHANGED TO [new date and time]

Another ENTER FUNCTION_ prompt appears.

Two-digit years are used for dates in the 9440. These dates are correctly converted to four-digit years when the scanned data is loaded onto the server.

How is the Model 40Z Battery Pack Charger/Discharger used with the Model 9440?

The Battery Pack Charger/Discharger allows the 9440 NiCad battery packs to be charged in six hours instead of the 14 hours required when charging the pack in the 9440 with the AC Adapter.

Charging NICAD Battery Packs

Managing ”Memory Effect”

Intermec recommends that the Charger/Discharger be used to fully discharge each NICAD battery pack once per month. This prevents the memory effect from reducing battery capacity. The memory effect occurs if a NICAD battery is only partially discharged before recharging. Over time, the battery becomes conditioned to this level of use, or ”remembers” it, and will not take a full charge.

For example, you take the battery pack from the charger and use it for three hours. You reconnect the battery pack to the charger. After this partial charge/discharge is repeated four times, the battery retains only a three hour capacity instead of its full ten hour capacity.

Take these precautions to prevent memory effect.

Do not charge the battery until the 9440 indicates a low battery condition.
Stock one fully charged spare battery for every two 9440s.
When the 9440 indicates a low battery condition, replace the low battery with a fully charged battery.
Recharge the low battery.
About once a month, or if memory effect is evident, use the discharge feature of the Charger/Discharger.

To get maximum use from the battery, always use it until the low battery warnings become frequent, or until it turns itself off before recharging.

Recharging NICAD Battery Packs

To recharge a NICAD battery pack

The Charge LED will go off and the Discharge LED will light, indicating that the unit is discharging. When the discharge is complete, the Charger/Discharger will automatically begin charging.

The 9440 NICAD battery pack supplies 1000 mA hours of power to the 9440. It requires a maximum of ten hours to discharge and six hours to charge. A complete discharge/recharge requires a maximum of 16 hours.

Alkaline batteries may not be recharged. The Charger/Discharger automatically senses the type of battery inserted and will not allow alkaline batteries to be charged or discharged.

How do I know when the battery is low?

If the cursor blinks and the beeps of the scanner change, then the batteries are getting low. Press ALT+B to see a diagnostic message from the scanner. If the message is LOW BATT, the battery pack is low. If possible, stop operations and attach the power supply and plug into an electrical socket to charge. The scanner may be operated with the power supply while the battery pack is charging.

If the power supply cannot be used, insert an optional alkaline battery pack and continue operations. If neither power supply nor spare battery pack is attached after the LOW BATT message is received, the scanner will shut itself off after 10-30 minutes of continuous operation.

The data recorded by the scanner will be saved in the scanner’s memory by the backup battery. The backup battery will run for several years. It supplies power to the scanner when the regular battery pack gets low. The backup battery remembers the data recorded in a particular session including date and time, even when the scanner is turned off or the regular battery pack is removed.

If the message LOW BACKUP is received, the backup battery is low. SirsiDynix Customer Support. Do not try to replace or recharge the backup battery.

How is the Model 9440 used for circulation?

It is important to remember the scanner cannot search anything in the SirsiDynix Symphony database; it can only record activities based on the commands that it can perform (Charge, Discharge, Create User, Renew, and Pay) for which an item ID and/or a user ID is required.
