Exchange Items Wizard

The Exchange Items wizard is used to scan items to exchange. See About the Exchange Items Wizard for more information.

Before scanning items for exchange, you must first determine if an item can be exchanged. See FAQs: Criteria To Determine if an Item Can Be Exchanged.

If the item can be exchanged but is not yet marked to be exchanged, you will need to make the item exchangeable. See FAQs: Criteria To Determine if an Item Can Be Exchanged.

When you scan an item, the system determines the destination library based on the profiles you have configured. The system also determines the destination library based on the active exchange libraries and their order of priority.

If you do not want the item to go to the system’s selected destination, you can manually modify the destination. In addition, this wizard displays the status of the exchange libraries that are active and shows the number of items in exchange (and more) for a specific exchange type or category.

This wizard also displays bibliographic information, messages, exchange state, any incomplete sets, and the status of the active exchange libraries.

To exchange items

Notice that if SirsiDynix Symphony suggests an exchange library, the name displays in the blue bar below the Item ID.

Depending on the specified wizard properties, when attempting to exchange an item having outstanding holds, the hold information dialog that appears lets you fill holds, remove holds, or ignore holds for the exchange item. (See Exchange Items Wizard Properties.)

Important Considerations When Using this Wizard

If a staff member at the HQ scans an item using the Exchange Items wizard and a destination library cannot be determined, SirsiDynix Symphony displays the following message at the bottom of the wizard screen:
The item has been returned to its home location
After scanning items using this wizard, the items are not yet exchanged. After an item is scanned and the exchange library destination has been identified, the item will go into a pending shipping status. Later on, pending shipping items can be confirmed for shipment with the Confirm Shipping for Exchange Library wizard to send them to the destination library.
If the system cannot find an appropriate library to send the item, the default library is used. The default library is defined by the system administrator in the Exchange Items wizard Properties. However, if this is the first exchange for the item and there is no previous library, then the item will go to the originating library, no matter what option is selected in the Exchange Items wizard properties.
