FAQs: Billing a User

How do I issue a bill if the user forgot his or her library card?

If the user forgets his or her library card, you can still issue a bill for the user using the Bill a User Wizard and the User Search Helper. Using the User Search helper, you can identify the user.

How do I issue a bill for an item when I cannot scan its barcode?

If you do not have the item in your hand, or if its barcode is unreadable, you can use the Bill a User wizard and the Item Search Helper. Using the Item Search helper, you can find and display the catalog record of the item.

Why can’t I bill a user from another library?

If your library is part of a multilibrary system, circulation maintenance library group policies must be set up for you to bill users in other libraries.

When a bill is generated for a user, a library is recorded in the bill record. The library that is recorded depends on the type of bill. For example:

When a bill is generated with a bill reason that has an associated item, the checkout library is stored as the library on the bill record.
When a bill is generated with a bill reason that does not have an associated item, the station’s library is stored as the library on the bill record.
For library privileges, the library of the station using the New User Registration Wizard is stored as the library on the bill record.

During the bill creation process, SirsiDynix Symphony checks the library stored on the bill record against the station library’s circulation maintenance group policy. If the stored library is not in the station library’s circulation maintenance group, the bill will not be created.

How do I issue a bill that includes tax?

If your library is required to collect tax on library bills, you must specify a Circulation Tax policy to associate with the Bill Reason policy (Bill Reason Wizard) for each billing reason that will incur a tax. For example, you may be required to collect a tax on fines for overdue items, but not on fees for placing holds on items.

When you create a bill using a bill reason that is taxed, the tax amount is automatically added to the total bill amount.
