About the Item Search Window

The Item Search window is used to identify a specific title in your library and display information at the title, call number, and item level. At the item level, other types of information related to the item’s circulation, bookings, holds, orders, and serials control are also available. Using the Item Search window, you can perform a Keyword, Browse, or Exact search.

The Item Search window changes depending on the activity you perform. The window is divided into three panes.

Search Pane

Contains the Search edit box. This pane also provides search type, search index (or a combination of indexes), and search library options. If there is an existing current title, it will display next. Finally, once a search has been performed, a summary of the search you performed displays immediately preceding the hit list.

Hit List Pane

Displays the list of matching records. By default, the search sorts on the first twenty (20) characters of the hit list entry. Depending on your search results or the type of search you are performing, a Browse list may display.

View Pane

Displays tabs that provide information about the selected title. Different tabs may display depending on the selected title, such as Description, MARC Holdings, Call Number/Item, Bound-with Information, and possibly other tabs, such as Holds or Order Information. Item circulation fields may also display to the right of the item tree. For more information about these circulation fields, see Item Statistical Fields of the Item Search View Pane.

Getting Around

To show (display) or hide the Search pane, click the Show/Hide Search Pane helper.
To show or hide the view pane, click the Show/Hide View Pane helper.
To show or hide the Circulation Information area, click the Show/Hide Circulation Information helper.
To sort by column header in the search results, click on a header that is activated for sorting. Not all column headers are activated.
To return to the previous or next search results, click the Search for list, and then select a previous search. Or, click the Previous Search or Next Search helpers . Only the most recent 20 searches are retained. *
To resize the view pane, move the pointer on the horizontal border that divides the Hit List and view pane (the pointer becomes a double-headed arrow), and then drag the border up or down. On the Call Number/Item tab, you can also resize the Call Number/Item and Circulation Information areas by positioning the insertion point on the vertical border between those two areas, then dragging the border left or right.
If you are searching for catalog items, you can use the Configure Options for Item Search Helper to qualify your search.
If you retrieved a list of titles, you may select one and click Detailed Display to see more information about the title, such as the complete bibliographic record and any attached call numbers and items.

Call Number/Item Tab

The Call Number/Item tab displays the hierarchical structure (tree view) of the title and its call numbers and items. You can expand (click a plus sign) or collapse (click a minus sign) the structure to make it easier to use. Click the plus sign next to the title record to display its call numbers and items. The tree uses the following icons to indicate a title record, call number record, and item.

The client will not expand call number nodes on the tree if the total number of call numbers for a title exceeds 2,000.

Depending on your search, the Hit List pane may display a Browse list. The Browse hit list uses the following icons to identify browse headings and See/See Also references.
