Character Translation Wizard

SirsiDynix Symphony supports the display and input of diacritics and special characters on devices whose keyboards and internal character sets contain those characters. SirsiDynix delivers a Symbol Table that allows you to enter special characters and diacritics in the client.

A special character is a single graphic element used as a letter in some alphabets, such as the Scandinavian ø (slash O) or the # (British pound). A diacritic is a symbol or other element which combines with a standard character, such as an ü (umlaut over u), ô (circumflex over o), or è (grave accent over e).

Two special character sets (fonts) are delivered to supply ECMA Latin Character support. One font is for Edit mode (to allow diacritical marks to be entered individually); and the other font is for Display mode (to see diacritical marks combined with their alphabetic character). The ability to enter and display ECMA characters while using the client is dependent on the terminal, terminal emulator, or printer capabilities, combined with policies that reference character translation tables. Devices without this capability can use no character translation and continue to display diacritics as asterisks (*) and special characters as their index counterparts.

From the List Policies window, you can create, display, modify, copy, or remove the Character Translation policies. Click Close to exit the wizard.

Attributes

The Character Translation wizard displays the following attributes.

Name

This attribute uniquely identifies a specific Character Translation policy. This name is ten characters or less, and may not include spaces or punctuation, except for dash (-), underscore (_), and dollar sign ($). Additionally, the pipe character (|) may not be used.

Description

This attribute provides more information about the policy and its use by the library. The description may be up to 60 characters in length. Although the Description attribute may contain spaces and punctuation, the pipe character (|) cannot be used.

Translation Table

The Table File name attribute is assigned from a specified list of character translation tables created in the /Unicorn/Charsets directory. SirsiDynix provides tables that provide character mapping for your workstation. There are table files for entering or modifying bibliographic records with special characters (TY-EDIT and MAC-EDIT), for personal computers displaying and printing special characters (TY-DISP, MAC-DISP, and WEBCAT), and for all other types of devices (DEFAULT). Select a translation table from the list.

Unicode Translation Table

The Unicode Translation Table attribute is used by sites who do not use MARC-8 encoding for their bibliographic records, or who have used special character representations which need to be translated to Unicode. You can customize the Unicode translation tables in the /Unicorn/Charsets directory on the server. In the Character Translation policy, select a Unicode translation table from the list. When a workstation connects to the server, the translation file is only downloaded if the stamp file on the workstation does not match the stamp file in the/Unicorn/Charsets directory on the server.

Note: This attribute does not depend on whether the SirsiDynix Symphony server you are connecting to is a Unicode system or not. In the WorkFlows client for the Java platform, all characters are represented in Unicode, and a conversion table for the character set is required on the server to translate to Unicode. In most SirsiDynix Symphony systems, MARC-8 is the supported character set, so the MARC-8 to Unicode conversion table is delivered within the WorkFlows Java client.
