Mark Item Lost Wizard

The Mark Item Lost wizard is used to mark an item in the catalog as Lost and change the item’s current location to LOST-CLAIM without discharging the item from the patron’s record. When you mark an item as Lost, you have the option of creating a lost item bill and assessing a processing fee.

When an item is marked as Lost, SirsiDynix Symphony does the following:

Shadows the item in the catalog so that other users will not inquire about the item
Prevents holds from being placed on the lost item
Prevents items from being recalled or used to satisfy a hold
Keeps the item on the patron’s record until the lost item bill is paid, forgiven, or waived, or item is returned to the library
Maintains the current location of LOST-CLAIM until the item returns to circulation

To mark an item lost

If the Current item record displays, the last item record displayed, modified, or added is retained. Click this button to select this item.

When not using the Item Search helper, you will be prompted to scan the Item ID. Once scanned, item information displays in the header.

If the Automatically Bill for Lost Item check box is selected on the Behavior tab of the wizard properties, information about the user being billed, information about the lost item, and the billing information displays on the Billing for Lost Item window. The billing information includes the amount for the lost item, the processing fee, and the payment type.

If desired, modify the billing information, and select one of the following options.

If you are making a payment using BLUEcloud Commerce via a card reader device, a dialog displays containing the subtotal and the following message:

Waiting for card swipe...

Swipe the card. If the card swipe is successful, this dialog closes and the payment completes. If the payment fails, WorkFlows automatically bills the user.

After the lost items are marked as Lost, select one of the following options:

Mark Item Lost to mark another item lost
Close to quit the wizard

Important Considerations When Using this Wizard

You can use the User Search helper to search for a patron and display a list of patron’s current charges. If a list of items currently checked out to the user displays, select the item you want to mark as Lost, and then click Mark Item Lost.
Click the glossary links to display more information.
To pay a Lost item bill from a credit account, you must select the Pay Now check box on the Behavior tab in the wizard properties, and select the appropriate Payment Type (such as CREDITACCT) and the Credit Reason (such as AUTOPAY) on the Default tab in the wizard properties.
Items can be automatically marked as Assumed Lost after a specified time with the Assumed Lost report. This report can be set up to assess a lost item bill and processing fee, according to the library’s lost item billing policies, and prepare lost item billing notices.
The Assumed Lost (LOST-ASSUM) Location policy, the Claims Lost (LOST-CLAIM) Location policy, and the Default Price policy must be created before the Mark Item Lost wizard can be used to mark an item as Lost. For new installations, these policies are delivered. For more information about defining or modifying these policies, go to FAQs: Defining Lost and Missing Policies.
You can mark circulation set items as lost using this wizard. For more information, see FAQs: Circulating Items in Groups.
