FAQs: Removing User Holds

How do I remove a user’s hold if the user forgot his or her library card?

The User Search Helper in the Remove User Hold wizard can be used to search for the correct user record when the user cannot present a library card for you to scan.

Can I remove an available hold in another library?

If your library is part of a multilibrary system, the Remove Item Hold and Remove User Hold wizards may allow you to remove an available hold at another library.

When you remove an available hold, and if the Remove User Hold or Remove Item Hold wizard has the Remove from Holds Shelf and Make Next Hold Available properties selected, the item is placed in transit (if necessary) from the Holds shelf to the pickup library for the next available hold. If the Make Next Hold Available property is not selected, the item is put in transit (if necessary) from the Holds shelf to the owning library.

If you remove an available hold when you do not have the item in hand, but the item is at another branch, the library staff at the other branch will know to send the item to the appropriate library because they run the List Transits report daily. The item will have already been placed in transit, so any attempts to charge the item will alert you that the item should be in transit to another library.

For example, a patron informs the staff at Main Library that she no longer wants a hold on War of the Worlds. The book is currently available on the Holds shelf at the North Branch Library for this patron. Staff at the Main Library remove the hold using the Remove User Hold wizard. The staff at the North Branch Library run the List Transits report, and the next morning they use the list to retrieve the title from their Holds shelf so they can return it to the owning library or the pickup library for the next available hold.
