Generate Predictions for Expected Issues Helper
The Generate Predictions for Expected Issues helper appears when creating or modifying a serial control.
The Get Expected Issue Info window appears when you use this helper, allowing you to define prediction record information for a single issue, which may then be used to generate prediction records for any number of additional issues.
The Get Expected Issue Info window also appears as issues are checked in if the Allow Automatic Prediction of Issues field is selected on the Patterns tab and Generate Predictions is selected, or after a serial control pattern is first created. This helper is accessible from both the Create Serial Control and Modify Serial Control wizards.
To generate predictions
1
In the Preview Expected Issues Beginning With field, type the number of prediction records you want to generate. Usually, the number typed here should generate prediction records for one complete publication cycle. |
For example, you may type 12 if you have a monthly publication renewed once per year, or 13 if you have a monthly publication, but during one month it publishes twice.

The next group of fields display the enumeration pattern labels, such as V. or NO., as they are currently defined in the control record. The default values that can be modified and that display next to the labels are based on the next expected issue, which is the first issue after the last predicted issue. They are not based on the last received issue. Replace any default value(s) with the actual enumerations defining the first prediction record to be generated. In a regularly published serial, these default values may only need to be modified the first time predictions are generated. |
3
The remaining fields are basic prediction record fields. Values must be typed for all of the following text boxes. |
4
Click OK to display a list of the issues you predicted based on the values you entered and the Patterns tab information. |
5
Check the list to ensure it states the prediction sequence you are expecting for this title and save your prediction to create the list of predictions in the Expected tab. |
6
If the perditions are not correct, redo your prediction to redefine the first prediction record. Change the pattern to make changes to the Patterns tab and select the Generate Predictions for Expected Issues helper again. |
Important Considerations When Using this Helper
•
You cannot generate predictions that have a chronology date, date expected, and date first prediction earlier than 1970. SirsiDynix Symphony will display an appropriate error message indicating that you are not able to create issues prior to this date. To represent historical holdings, you can do the following. |
•
Update the MARC holdings record with a summary statement in the 866 tag that reflects the range of issues. |
•
Do not create predictions. Instead, use the Check In Issues of a Serial wizard to receive special issues. Because you are not following a pattern when you use the special issue work flow, you are able to avoid the pre-1970 date limitation, and you can receive an issue with any date in the Chronology field. |
