FAQs: Understanding Serial Display and Maintenance Libraries

The Library policy contains several attributes which affect a user’s ability to display and maintain serial control information in multilibrary or consortia systems.

Serial Display Libraries Attribute

Each Library policy specifies whether users associated with that library can view serial control information for other libraries in a multilibrary system. If the text box is blank, all libraries are permitted to display this library’s serials information. If a list is selected, only those libraries listed may display this library’s serials information. If No Access is selected, then no libraries can display this library’s serials information.

Serial Maintenance Libraries Attribute

Each Library policy specifies whether users associated with that library can modify serial control information for other libraries in a multilibrary system. This attribute controls whether certain serials information can be modified by users associated with a specified library. If the text box is blank, all libraries are permitted to modify this library’s serials information. If a list is selected, only those libraries listed may modify this library’s serials information. If No Access is selected, then no libraries can modify this library’s serials information.

An example of how a SirsiDynix Symphony administrator could set the Serial Display and Maintenance attributes follows.

For example, Staff at the public libraries in River County (RIVERCITY, LAKESIDE, OCEANVIEW) can display each other’s serial control information, but they can only modify their own serial control records. The Serial Maintenance Libraries attribute in the RIVERCITY Library policy contains only RIVERCITY. However, the Serial Display Libraries attribute contains RIVERCITY, LAKESIDE, and OCEANVIEW. This is the same pattern used for the LAKESIDE and OCEANVIEW Library policies.
