Punctuations Tab for Entries

Entry punctuation is used to specify whether an entry should display punctuation at the beginning of, the end of, or should enclose an entire entry. The punctuation is not actually added to the entry; it is sent as part of the display instead.

For example, the 440 (Series) entry is typically displayed enclosed in parentheses. This is accomplished by configuring entry punctuation to display a left parenthesis at the beginning of the entry and a right parenthesis at the end of the entry.

Punctuation to Begin and End Entry

This section contains the following attributes.

Beginning Punctuation

This attribute specifies the punctuation an entry should display at the beginning of an entry.

End Punctuation

This attribute specifies the punctuation an entry should display at the end of an entry.

Variations

This section contains a list of the different punctuation variations for this entry. Click Create, Modify, and Remove to update this list.

The attributes under Variations specify whether special punctuation should display based on the presence of certain subfields. A subfield(s) may be replaced with punctuation, may be enclosed in 1-20 punctuation characters, or may be displayed in a sequence.

Type

This attribute specifies how punctuation is used when displaying an entry. If a Type is not specified, you may type only beginning punctuation. If you click Replace, you are prompted to type a replacement string and the affected subfields. If you click Enclose, you are prompted to type beginning punctuation, ending punctuation, and the affected subfields. If you click Sequence, you are prompted to type beginning punctuation, middle punctuation, end punctuation, and the affected subfields.

Beginning Punctuation

This attribute contains the punctuation an entry should display at the beginning of an entry, if the subfields specified in the Subfields attribute are included in this entry.

Middle Punctuation

This attribute contains the punctuation that replaces subfield codes internal to the grouping, if the subfields specified in the Subfields attribute are included in this entry.

End Punctuation

This attribute contains the punctuation an entry should display at the end of an entry, if the subfields specified in the Subfields attribute are included in this entry.

Replacement String

This attribute contains the punctuation that will replace the specified subfields.

Subfields

This attribute displays a set of subfields that, if present in the entry, affects the display of the entry punctuation. The Display Subfields gadget displays the subfields that can be used with this entry. Using this gadget, click All to include all subfields or click Include to include only certain subfields. It is possible to exclude subfields. Click Exclude and selecting the subfields to exclude.

For example, you may wish for subfield markers in 6XX entries to be replaced by dashes so that the display of a record may more closely resemble a catalog card. In the case of the 6XX entries, instead of displaying the |x, |y, and |z characters as a blank space, the subfields may be replaced with the characters – –.
