Entry ID Policy Helper

Before creating entry information for a Format policy, you may need to create an Entry ID according to the following procedure.

To create an entry ID

Name

This uniquely identifies an Entry ID. The name can be 1-10 characters in length with no punctuation, except for dash (-) and underscore (_). Additionally, the pipe character (|) may not be used. For simple Entry IDs, the tag number in a MARC bibliographic or authority entry is often used. For synonym list Entry IDs, the name should be descriptive of the Format policy’s purpose, such as indicating whether the synonym list will be used for full or brief displays. As many Entry IDs as needed can be created. The combination of Entry ID names and the Entry ID purpose must be unique.

For example, the 008 (Fixed Field) entry is used in the Catalog-, Authority-, and Holding-purpose Entry ID groups; therefore, the 008 Entry ID name is used more than once.

Description

This 1-60 character attribute provides more information about the policy and its use by the library. Although the Description attribute may contain spaces and punctuation, the pipe character (|) cannot be used.

Purpose

Regardless of the type of Entry ID, all Entry IDs are used for specific types of records. All Entry IDs are used for a specific purpose. Depending on the purpose of the Format policy, SirsiDynix Symphony will assign the appropriate purpose for the Entry ID. For example, when creating an entry ID for a catalog-purpose format, SirsiDynix Symphony will assign the catalog purpose to the entry ID. When creating an entry ID for a community info-purpose format, SirsiDynix Symphony will assign the community info purpose to the entry ID.

Note: This attribute cannot be modified.

Type

Each Entry ID is either a simple Entry ID or a synonym list Entry ID. A simple Entry ID defines a single entry, such as 245 or ON_RESV_BY, that may be used in a particular type of record. A synonym list is a list of simple Entry IDs that are grouped together for brief or full displays or for templates used in creating a particular type of record.

Mode

If Synonym List type is selected, this attribute becomes active and indicates whether the Entry IDs should be included or excluded from displaying or from the template.

Entries

If Synonym List type is selected, this attribute becomes active and contains a list of simple Entry IDs that are included or excluded from displaying or from the record creation template. Click the Policy List gadget and select simple Entry IDs. In some formats, the order of the entry IDs is important. Click the Up and Down arrows to move entry IDs up and down the list as needed.
