MARC Editor Help Wizard

The MARC Editor Help wizard allows you to modify the help text that appears for MARC21 and UNIMARC tags, subfields, indicators, fixed fields, and coded fields in the MARC Editor. You can modify help text for fields in the Cataloging, Holding, Authority, and Community Information-type Format policies.

To modify MARC Editor help text

In the Cataloging Configuration group, click the MARC Editor Help wizard.

In the MARC Editor Help window, the Format and Editor panes appear. The left Format pane displays a “tree” of format type folders: Cataloging, Authority, Holding, and MARC Community Info.

Click a Format Type folder in the Format pane, such as Cataloging, and folders for all policies of that format type appear in the format tree. By default, the Cataloging format group is expanded.

Click a Format Policy folder, such as MARC, and all editable format fields appear in the format tree. If an indicator or subfield has been marked as obsolete, the text [Obsolete] will appear.

In format tree, select a Field, such as the 590, and an editing template opens in the Editor pane. This template displays the valid indicators and subfields for this MARC field.

Click Modify, and the text boxes that can be modified become available. The [Obsolete] entries will display as read only.

Type new Field, Indicator, Subfield, and Coded Field descriptions or Help text as desired. The descriptions can be up to 200 characters in length, but only the first 30 will display without having to scroll to see the rest. Neither a semicolon nor a horizontal bar (pipe) may be used in description text.

Click Save.

If you click another field in the format tree before clicking Save, a confirmation dialog box will display and confirm whether or not you want to save your modifications before moving to another field.

To see the help text changes in the MARC Editor, halt and run the workstation server.

It is not possible to remove tags, subfields, coded fields, indicators, or fixed fields from the record formats using this wizard.

Editing the Record Leader and Control Field Help for MARC21 Records

Using MARC Editor Help wizard you can edit record leader and control field descriptions, as well as fixed field and physical description character position and code descriptions.

Record Leader 000 – Changes made to the 000 record leader are made per format. When you expand the 000 folder in a format, the position values appear. Select a value in the format tree, click Modify, and you can edit the code and/or position value descriptions in the Editor pane. You will see the modified code and position descriptions when you expand the record leader in the Editor’s MARC View or in the shortcut menus in the Descriptive View.

Control Fields 001, 003, 004, and 005 – You can edit these control field descriptions. Changes are made per format.

Control Fields 006 and 008 – Changes made to the 006 and 008 are made per format. When you expand the 006 and 008 folders, the position values appear. Select a value or group of values in the format tree, click Modify, and you can edit the code and/or position value descriptions in the Editor pane. You will see the modified code and position descriptions when you expand the control field in the Editor’s MARC View or in the shortcut menus in the Descriptive View.

Note: The lists of Lang and Ctry codes are not included in this SirsiDynix Symphony version.

Physical Description Field 007 – You can edit the 007 by format type: Cataloging, Authority, Holding, MARC Community Info. Changes you make to the 007 apply to all formats of this type. You cannot make changes per format. When you expand the 007 folder, the physical description values appear. Select a value in the format tree, click Modify, and you can edit the code and/or position value descriptions in the Editor pane. You will see the modified code and position descriptions in the Physical Description dialog box that displays when adding the 007 field.

Viewing Controlled Vocabulary Entries for 33X RDA Tags

You can also view controlled vocabulary terms and codes as well as their descriptions for 336, 337, and 338 (33X) RDA tags in the editor pane. Expand the tag's folder in the format tree and select a value. These entries display as read only and cannot be changed.
